The remit for this challenging ‘pilot’
scheme in Dagenham for Hanover Housing Association was to provide
a modern ‘cinema’ facility, yet catering to the needs
of the frail and elderly, in an ‘Extracare’ Home which
provides support for people suffering from dementia.
The cinema is located on the ground floor
in a room measuring approx.7m long x 4m wide x 2.5m high. The cinema
is intended to be used for reminiscence opportunities, for educational
purposes and to develop links with the wider community.
To achieve the client’s objectives,
we made generous use of timber finishes (on chair armrests and seat
backs, handrails and the credenza housing the a-v equipment at the
screen end)and carpet finish on floors and walls to create ‘warmth’
within the cinema. To replicate the ambience of a cinema, a symbolic
‘pros arch’ was positioned at the front made of mdf
and finished in a contrasting veneer to the credenza. Back to back
seat dimensions are a generous 1500mm with ‘led’ lighting
strips highlighting changes of floor levels. The cinema is equipped
with a ceiling –mounted d.l.p. projector operated with a hand
held remote.
