Cinestructures was involved in providing
a consultancy from inception for the design and construction of
this innovative preview theatre in the heart of Soho, London. The
36 seater preview theatre is unique in that it serves both as a
normal screening room (providing film and digital facilities) and
can be easily converted to a digital grading facility (see article
in CT on Soho Images Preview).
The preview theatre is located on the ground
floor of the premises in a room measuring approx. 11.3m long x 6.8m
wide x 3.3m high, formerly a sales office. The objective was to
have the biggest picture size possible (within limitations imposed
by room) and a throw of 10m. To achieve this objective, the screen
frame had to be located tight against structural columns, with screen
speakers positioned on the floor below the screen.
The interior design concept for the walls
is based on colour grading of the ‘Soundcheck’ acoustic
fabric from greys (at the rear), to browns (in the middle) to black
at the screen end to provide tonal calm and blend in with the black
serge materials used at the front. Latham acoustic panelling is
used on the rear wall and over part of the ceiling. The main preview
theatre area is approached obliquely to provide a further sense
of drama.
